Claymen Aman Khanna

Tucked away down a narrow passageway in the urban village Hauz Khaus, is an unmarked door hidden amongst a cluster of boutiques from independent Indian labels in fashion, accessories and art. Behind this door with peacock wall painting resides one of the most exciting and interesting brands to emerge from Delhi.

Claymen is a thoughtful collection of clay work that finds beauty in simplicity across a range of functional, dysfunctional and sculptural objects.

Founded by Aman Khanna, this talented artist is more than a ceramicist. Trained as a graphic artist and illustrator, Aman is overall, a visual storyteller. He studied and worked in London and after setting up his own design studio Infomen, returned to India to set up another studio, Infonauts, in Delhi. It was not long before Aman began exploring another creative outlet and began working with clay.

Claymen's range of functional objects add aesthetic by taking away. They are minimal. They are functional. They simply are what they are: a celebration of a style that lives at peace with its own imperfections. These ceramics have been made with humble hands and are built to effectively perform the task at hand.

"The idea of being or being present in time and space is reflected in my choice of material - clay is a simple, everyday, raw material used by everyone. Sun dried, half-baked in an open fire – clay is omnipresent and yet individual in the way one uses it. In time, the clay dissolves back into the Earth."

Aman also produces small and large scale sculptures from observations of the common man and his dilemmas which are collectively referred to as Claymen.

"Claymen figures come in peace and maintain silence. Although going through their own existential crises at all times they are mere spectators or observers to the notion that “man is losing his humanity and becoming a thing amongst the things he produces."
